Reimagining Education: What to Retain and What to Add

By Poonam Saini, Academic Director – EdTalk Consulting

“How much have you scored?”—a question that echoes through every child’s schooling years. For decades, marks and grades have been the deciding factor in a child’s opportunities, confidence, and future. Yet, this obsession with scores has also created immense stress and, in many cases, led to disengagement from learning itself.

The truth is, education cannot be measured by numbers alone. To prepare children for the 21st century, we must ask ourselves: What should we retain from our current system, and what must we add to truly empower our learners?

What Should We Retain?

While education must evolve, some traditions remain invaluable. Practices worth preserving include:

  • Cultural and moral values: Celebrating festivals in schools instills respect for diversity and the spirit of unity.
  • Respect for teachers: The traditional role of the teacher as a guide and mentor remains critical.
  • Holistic growth practices: Yoga, meditation, and self-discipline nurture emotional well-being and resilience.
  • Human values: Empathy, respect, and community spirit must continue to be emphasized.

These aspects ground students in strong values, ensuring they grow into responsible and empathetic citizens.

What Needs to Change?

At the same time, certain practices need to evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.

  • Move beyond rote learning: Education must shift from memorization to understanding, creativity, and application.
  • Redefine assessments: Grades and tests capture only part of a child’s ability. Alternative methods like project-based learning and portfolios can provide more meaningful evaluation.
  • Personalized learning: Each child is unique, with different strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Tailored teaching approaches are essential.
  • Critical and creative thinking: Students must learn to question, analyze, solve problems, and adapt to new situations.

Preparing for the Future

In today’s world, children need more than knowledge. They need skills that help them thrive in complex, unpredictable environments:

  • Critical thinking for decision-making.
  • Creativity to innovate and adapt.
  • Social-emotional learning to face challenges with resilience.
  • Inclusivity to ensure equal opportunities for every learner, regardless of background.

The Road Ahead

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has already set the direction by emphasizing flexibility, holistic development, and inclusive practices. But real change will come only when schools, teachers, and parents embrace a mindset of reimagination—retaining what works, and reshaping what no longer serves.

Reimagining education is not about rejecting the past. It is about blending timeless values with modern skills, creating an environment where children are not only prepared for exams but also for life.

At EdTalk, we believe the future of education lies in this balance—nurturing creativity, empathy, and resilience alongside knowledge. When we dare to question, adapt, and innovate, we can truly build an education system where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high.
